Social Action

Tikkun Olam — repairing our world for today and the future. This committee reflects the Jewish values of justice (tzedakah), compassion (hesed), and peace (shalom). Our Social Action committee seeks to repair the world through ongoing projects and programs that encompass these values. Each act of kindness, no matter how small, helps to build a new world. The committee meets most months throughout the year to identify and implement worthwhile programs that benefit both our congregation and the wider community.

Partial list of projects for the coming year:

  • Operation Isaiah 5778 — food collection for Kitchen on the Street;
  • Operation Linus — “Everyone needs a Blankie” (OT participation in Valley-wide Mitzvah Day);
  • Mitzvah Mall at Or Tzion — blood drive, clothing, book, etc. collections;
  • Filling backpacks with food onsite at Kitchen on the Street

Ongoing programs:

  • Support for TOPS (Tikun Olam Partners) — the Or Tzion B’nai Mitzvah mentoring program.
  • Cellphones, eyeglasses and toiletries collected throughout the year and donated to shelters for the needy. (Please deposit your donations in the collection bins in the Or Tzion lobby.)
  • Baby wipes, sunblock and shampoo collection for babies in the UMOM and Crisis Nursery shelters.
  • Participation in Shalom House ("Gesher" Council for Jews with Special Needs) programs.

Bikkur Holim – This committee honors one of the most important mitzvot according to Jewish law … caring for the sick. The committee, along with our clergy, reaches out to members either when they or a loved one is ill with phone calls, hospital visits and, if needed, meals. The committee also assists Rabbi Caplan in updating the mishaberach list read weekly from the bimah. The Bikkur Holim committee does not have regular meetings but does welcome members to help make phone calls or help our members. For more information, contact Ellie Aronow at bearonow@msn.com.

If you would like to be a member of the Social Action committee, please contact Skeeter Marcus at skeeterfoxmarcus@gmail.com. Come join us and do a Mitzvah!

Project Isaiah Kitchen on the Street Donation Collection!

Over the past several years, congregants have collected food and donations to boost our Project Isaiah gift to Kitchen on the Street. We provide tables, chairs, collecting bins and signs and our volunteers do the rest!

Habitat for Humanity:
Congregation Or Tzion volunteers once again helped build with Habitat for Humanity. The build location was at Hillside in Avondale. We look forward to continuing opportunities to partner with this humanitarian group.
